MASTER THESIS AT UDK & SOCIAL SCIENCE CENTER PROJECT INFO DEMO VIDEO
What if you could step inside a social research study—and follow the scientists as they take you by the hand through their work? “Hard to Reach” is a vr project that makes the research study “Who Takes Care of Grandma?” accessible in an immersive way. The study presented in the VR experience examines the precarious working conditions of migrant care workers employed in illegal 24-hour live-in care arrangements in private households.
The goal of the project was to make the research process visible and to foreground how social knowledge is produced. Hard to Reach explores how VR and storytelling can be used to reach that goal. The VR application guides users through seven virtual rooms, each representing a different phase of the research process from initial questions and methodological considerations to interviews, obstacles, failures, and reflections shared by the scientist.
The project was selected for the WZB’s 50th Anniversary exhibition.
